Jewish families continue to fight against museums and galleries that are highly resistant to returning Nazi looted art to descendants of original owners. Raymond Dowd, who lives on Long Island, has been a champion in the battle to turn this around.

Mr. Dowd is a partner at the law firm Dunnington Bartholow & Miller LLP in New York City. His legal career spans high-profile cases in estate law and the restitution of cultural property. He has successfully litigated landmark decisions, including the Estate of Doris Duke and the recovery of an ancient Assyrian tablet for Berlin’s Pergamon Museum.

An adjunct professor at Fordham Law School, Mr. Dowd serves on the Board of Governors of the FEU in Paris and of the National Arts Club in NYC and co-founded the annual Art Litigation and Dispute Resolution Institute at the New York County Lawyers’ Association. He has also served as General Counsel for the Federal Bar Association and is the author of the Copyright Litigation Handbook, now in its 16th edition.

In recent years, Mr. Dowd has played a crucial role in the restitution of artworks looted during the Holocaust. He has led efforts to recover Egon Schiele artworks on behalf of the heirs of Fritz Grünbaum, a Jewish cabaret performer murdered in Dachau. Additionally, he recently represented the heirs of Heinrich Rieger, Egon Schiele’s dentist, in a case involving Portrait of the Artist’s Wife. Mr. Dowd is a frequent lecturer and served as a Visiting Professor at the Paris I Sorbonne Law School in 2024.
